Redwood Curtain CopWatch, based in the north coast of California, is part of a larger movement of self organized CopWatch groups throughout the US. Our local efforts seek to intervene in the drastic rise of the presence, militarization, and violence of the police, and build support networks based on self-determination, caring, and concrete needs.

"The Mehserle Trial" , from Mumia Abu-Jamal July 10, 2010
Submitted by copwatch on Sat, 07/17/2010 - 11:49amThe manslaughter verdict returned against former BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) cop, Johannes Mehserle, for the videotaped murder of Oscar Grant, sent hundreds of protesters back into the hot streets of Oakland, California, Grant's hometown.
The corporate media scratched its collective head, essentially asking 'Why protest when the guy was convicted?"
The protesters knew, however, that the court system bent heaven and earth to return the lightest verdict possible; involuntary manslaughter' and that Mehserle faces a possible sentence of probation to a maximum of 4 years in prison.
They knew that Mehserle got a non black jury, hundreds of miles from Oakland.
They knew that each of those hundreds could've been Oscar Grant, unarmed, shot to death on tape and the same thing would've happened.
Of course, the corporate media doesn't get it.

DOWNLOAD of FBI's File on Mumia Abu-Jamal- Racism Is At the Core of an Unjust System ~message from London
For the first time in the history of Mumia's case, we now have electronic access to his much redacted 900 page FBI file which was all collected several years BEFORE there was any question of a crime or of killing a cop. It is a record of the targeting of Mumia since the time he was 14 years old.

Supreme Court of Death Rules Against Mumia Abu-Jamal
Abolish the Racist Death Penalty!
On January 19, the U.S. Supreme Court took a clear step toward the legal lynching of Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Court vacated a 2001 decision by federal district court judge William Yohn overturning Mumia’s death sentence. Yohn’s decision had been previously upheld by the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals. The new ruling by the Supreme Court underscores our insistence that fighters for Mumia’s freedom must place no faith in the courts, which, at every level, have colluded with the police and prosecutors to see through the execution of this innocent man.
Great Film Centered around Mumia Abu-Jamal- FRIDAY, July 3rd, Eureka
Submitted by copwatch on Fri, 07/03/2009 - 10:29am
Come see this film at PARC's new location!
"In Prison My Whole Life" is a well done documentary inspired by a man who was born on the day that Mumia Abu-Jamal was arrested. Mumia has been a political prisoner, on death row, for over 27 years, now.
The filmmaker does a great job talking with people about (researching) racial injustice and the Prison Industrial Complex and giving a thorough run down of the frame-up that has had Mumia on death row since 1981.
Mumia is facing execution and we can't let it happen!!

Pam Africa on the Supreme Court ruling against Mumia
On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal and granted the Philadelphia DA's petition for a writ of certiorari. Basically, the Supreme Court went against the lower federal circuit court's 2001 and 2008 rulings, which granted a new sentencing phase jury trial if the death penalty was to be reinstated in Jamal's case. Now the case goes back down to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, who will decide whether they will re-impose the death penalty without the jury trial.

According to a posting yesterday on the US Supreme Court's website, the Court has scheduled a conference for this Friday, January 15, to discuss Mumia's case. Specifically, they are looking at the Philadelphia DA's request to have Mumia executed without a new sentencing hearing.
