Sergeant Pat Gonzales (who was shot & survived on March 21, 2009 during the Lovelle Mixon killing) murdered Gary King, Jr.on September 20th, 2007. In 2006, Gonzales shot and paralyzed 17-year-old Ameir Rollins,and in 2002, Gonzales shot and killed 19-year-old Joshua Russell. According to witnesses, Gary King attempted to disengage himself from the altercation, but Gonzales beat, stripped, and repeatedly tasered Gary.Gonzales then released Gary, disoriented, hurting, and scared, and pumped two bullets into Gary's backas he fled.

 

Starting salary for an Oakland police officer is $70,000. Only 18% of all Oakland police live in Oakland. That means that 80% of police salaries leave Oakland to feed the suburbs.

40% of the Oakland’s billion dollar annual budget is spent on “public safety” = police.


While only  .5% of Oakland’s budget is spent on economic development.

 

In 2007, OPD killed 5 people. In 2008, OPD killed 7 people. Not a single officer to have shot someone has been disciplined in any way. To name a few, in the past year the police killed:  Oscar Grant, Andrew Moppin,Lesley Xavier Allen, Casper Banjo, Jose Luis Buenrostro-Gonzalez, Mac "Jody" Woodfox, Anita Gay

Oakland police “Rough Riders” were a group of officers accused of assaulting suspects, planting evidence and falsifying reports between 1996 and 2000. The city of Oakland paid out $11 million in a negotiated settlement to 119 “plaintiffs. Captain Ed Poulson, head of OPD internal affairs is on paid leave for his personal involvement in the 2000 beating death of Jerry Amaro. Oakland has paid an average of nearly $2.5 million per year since 2003 to settle lawsuits against the police department. More than 1,000 complaints are filed with the OPD internal affairs department each year.

 


Health

According to a 2008 report by the Alameda County Health Department, an African born in West Oakland, as compared to a white child born in the Oakland hills: Will live 15 years less. Is 1 ½ times more likely to be born premature with a low birth rate. Is 7 times more likely to born into poverty.

As an adult, will be 5 times more likely to hospitalized with diabetes, twice as likely to die of heart disease,  3 times more likely to die of a stroke and twice as likely to die of cancer.

According to that same report, Africans are sentenced to prison for drug offenses at a rate 34 times that of whites, even though they use illicit drugs at about the same rate.

 

 

Economy and Prison
One in five families in Oakland live on $5,000 a year. African people make up 5% of California population, but 50% of California prison system, which is 4th largest in the WORLD.
