HAPPY MAY DAY! - from Critical Resisance, Strategy & Struggle to ABOLISH the Prison Industrial Complex

Dear Friends,

Happy May Day!

Today all over the world people are coming together to demonstrate the power of political and economic solidarity; to challenge anti-immigrant racism; to celebrate spring and rebirth; and to affirm our capacity to build a society founded on interdependence.

We know that in the United States, this "other labor day" isn't officially recognized or celebrated in every community.  Reclaiming May Day is an important tactic for building alliances with communities worldwide.

National Statement from October 22 Coalition on Arizona SB 1070

Stop Attacks on Immigrants!

The October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation condemns the new Arizona immigration law and all other laws and policies in place or in the works throughout the nation that criminalizes immigrants and many people of color.   SB 1070 promotes racial profiling and expands the criminalization of people based on how they look, what they wear,  their skin color, language, and/or nationality.  This law doesn't just give police the right to stop anyone they think looks "suspiciously illegal," it makes it mandatory for police to do so.

Complaint Against Eureka Police Department's Sanchez

A few days ago, a young man made this complaint to the Eureka Police Department:

I am a college student in Alaska, my home state. I am currently taking some time to travel through the continental states. Today (April 23, 2010), my friend and I sat down for a moment with our heavy backpacks near the St. Vincent de Paul's cafeteria. After a few minutes, Officer Reyna-Sanchez walked past many people and approached us. A third person who had stopped to rest saw Officer Reyna-Sanchez coming at us and said “Don't shoot.” The officer then smugly told us that he had shot and killed someone last month. He then told us that we were trespassing, though there were no signs indicating such. Officer Reyna-Sanchez verbally harassed me, telling me, for instance that he could take away my rights and “You better leave Eureka... You and I will bump heads if you stay around.”

For the first time in the history of Mumia's case, we now have electronic access to his much redacted 900 page FBI file which was all collected several years BEFORE there was any question of a crime or of killing a cop. It is a record of the targeting of Mumia since the time he was 14 years old.
